AWARDS

Broadening Horizons has been formally recognized for the work the program has done to preserve the local environment. On April 5, 2006, Broadening Horizons Recycling was given The Gander and Area Chamber of Commerce Environmental Award during the 6th Annual Joe and Clarice Goodyear Business Achievement Awards Gala.

The award is given to a local area business that has gone beyond environmental compliance and demonstrated a commitment to improved environmental performance of their business operations. The business would have also contributed to local environmental awareness and/or have developed partnerships with stakeholders to promote environmental stewardship.

On June 5, 2006, Broadening Horizons Recycling was honored again with a Provincial Environment Award in the Community Group or Organization category. The Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Awards Program is a joint initiative of the Department of Environment and Conservation, NLWI and MMSB.
The Newfoundland and Labrador Environmental Awards Program honors our outstanding leaders in environment and conservation. The environmental awards represent a public acknowledgment of the initiative, dedication, and hard work that individuals, communities, schools and organizations have put into caring for our environment and the wise use of our natural heritage.

The environmental awards are presented to individuals and groups who make an exceptional effort to create a healthier environment and to help promote and encourage environmentally friendly practices. Award winners also receive a $1,000 honorarium from MMSB to be used to continue their environmental project or donated in their name to an environmental organization or cause. Awards are presented in seven categories.

CELL PHONES and INKJET CARTRIDGES

Broadening Horizons Recycling has also expanded into other areas of recycling. Broadening Horizons has partnered with the GreenFund based out of Port Aux Basques to implement the recycling of cell phones and inkjet printer cartridges.

Recently, a remanufacturing market has developed for empty printer cartridges and used cell phones. Inkjet cartridges are being refilled to meet a demand by a segment of consumers looking for a cheaper printing solution. Used cell phones in working condition are being resold at low cost to consumers in other countries or to certain emergency services or needy groups.

The GreenFund supplies shipping and sale to wholesalers and Broadening Horizons is reimbursed for items collected. Collection of cell phones and inkjet printer cartridges will not be part of regular curbside collections. Due to their delicate electronics they are easily damaged, which prevents them from being collected at curbside. In order to collect these items, drop-off centers have been established throughout the community. Drop-off centers are located at:
